Hand Stamped vs Laser Engraved — Which One Should You Choose?

We get asked this a lot. And since we do both, we can give you an honest answer rather than a sales pitch for one over the other.

How they're different

Laser engraving uses a machine. You send it a file, it burns the design into the surface with a focused beam of light — no physical tool ever touches the metal. Every letter is identical, perfectly spaced, exactly the same depth. It's clean, consistent, and works well for detailed artwork, logos, fine text, or even a scanned signature or paw print.

Hand stamping is done by a person. Each letter is a separate metal punch, held in place by hand and struck with a hammer, one character at a time. The depth depends on how hard the stamp is hit. The spacing depends on the artisan's eye. No two pieces come out identical — which is exactly the point for a lot of our customers.

Durability

Both hold up well on solid metal. Laser engraving cuts at a controlled, consistent depth, so it doesn't fade or rub off with daily wear, water, or sweat — a safe bet for something worn every day like a necklace or keychain. Hand stamping is also long-lasting on thick metal (like our kadas and dog tags), but since the depth varies slightly by hand, very thin or soft metal can show wear a little sooner. For the metal thicknesses we use, this rarely matters in practice.

Precision and detail

If you want something precise — a logo, a detailed design, fine cursive, multiple lines of text, or anything that needs to be exact — laser is the better choice. It handles complexity well and the result is sharp and uniform. Our stainless-steel dog tags and number tags are laser engraved for exactly this reason.

Hand stamping works best with simple, bold capital letters and short messages — a name, a date, a word that means something. Intricate designs are harder to stamp cleanly by hand, so we'd steer you toward laser engraving if your text is long or detailed.

Look and feel

This really comes down to taste. Laser engraving looks clean, modern, and uniform — every letter identical. Hand stamping looks raw, handmade, and a little imperfect — in a good way. The slight irregularities aren't defects, they're just what happens when a person makes something by hand. Most people who've held both can tell the difference immediately, and most people already know which one they're drawn to before we even explain the difference.

Turnaround and cost

Laser engraving is machine-driven, so it's typically quicker for us to turn around, especially on detailed designs. Hand stamping takes a little more time per piece since every letter is struck individually — worth knowing if you're ordering close to a deadline like a birthday or festival.

Honestly, it depends on what the piece is for

A pet ID tag needs to be readable and durable above all — laser works well there. A copper keychain with your kid's name on it, or a kada with a date you want to remember — that's where hand stamping makes more sense emotionally, even if laser could technically do it too.

Quick way to decide:

  • Choose laser engraving if you want a clean, detailed, modern finish, fine text or small fonts, or you're personalizing something worn every day like a keyring or ring.
  • Choose hand stamping if you want a rustic, one-of-a-kind, handmade feel — especially on a chunky dog tag or kada.

A few honest answers to questions we get a lot

Does laser engraving fade over time?
No. It cuts below the surface, so regular wear, water, or cleaning won't rub it off.

Is hand stamping less durable?
Not really, on the metal thicknesses we use. It's mainly thin or soft metal where stamped text can wear faster than a laser cut.

Can hand stamping do cursive or small fonts?
It's tough. We'd recommend laser engraving for cursive, small fonts, or anything detailed.

Which is better for dog tags?
Both work — laser gives a sharp, modern look with fine detail (good for longer text), hand stamping gives that classic, rugged tag look.

Can you combine both on one piece?
Sometimes, yes — ask us on WhatsApp and we'll tell you honestly if it works for what you have in mind.

We'll always tell you which method we're using on each product page. And if you're still not sure which to go for, just message us on WhatsApp — we'll point you in the right direction rather than just upselling whichever is easier for us to make.
