25 Dog Tag Engraving Ideas for Pets: What to Write on Your Pet's ID Tag

A pet tag has one serious job: get your dog or cat home. But it is also the one piece of "jewellery" your pet wears every single day, so there is room for a little personality. If you already know the safety basics (name plus a working phone number), this guide is about the fun part: what to actually write, from a plain name to a funny line, with 25 ideas that still fit on a small tag.

Not sure what is safe to put on a tag, or what size to buy? Start with our Pet ID Tag Guide, then come back here for the wording. Looking for wording ideas for people instead? Our 50+ Engraving Message Ideas guide covers that.

First, the rules of the tag (30 seconds)

Tags are small, so wording has to be short. Three things hold true for almost every tag:

  • The phone number comes first. Whatever else you write, keep room for a number you actually answer. If a line does not fit alongside it, drop the line, not the number.
  • Short beats clever. A tag is read in a hurry, often in poor light, often by someone holding a nervous animal.
  • Leave off your full home address. We explain why in the Pet ID Tag Guide. A phone number does the job without telling a stranger where you live.

1. Classic name and number layouts for dog tags

If you want a clean, no-nonsense tag, these are the layouts we engrave most often. They work on any shape.

  1. BRUNO / 98XXXXXXXX: name on line one, number on line two. Simple and always readable.
  2. BRUNO / 98XXXXXXXX / 97XXXXXXXX: adds a second number (family member or neighbour) for the days you are unreachable.
  3. HI, I'M BRUNO / CALL 98XXXXXXXX: friendlier, and "call" tells a stranger what to do.
  4. BRUNO / MUMBAI / 98XXXXXXXX: your city or area instead of a full address, useful if a vet or shelter needs a location hint.
  5. BRUNO + paw print / 98XXXXXXXX: a small symbol is a nice touch on a laser-engraved tag.

2. Funny pet tag engraving ideas

Humour is the most popular reason people write something beyond the name. These work best on the back of a tag, with the name and number on the front.

  1. I'M NOT LOST. MY HUMAN IS.
  2. I'M FRIENDLY. MY HUMAN IS NOT.
  3. PLEASE RETURN MY HUMAN
  4. SNACKS ACCEPTED
  5. I RUN THIS HOUSE

3. Sweet and sentimental dog and cat tag wording

For the pet who is really a family member, these keep it short but warm.

  1. CALL MY HUMAN: gentle, and it points the finder to the number.
  2. I'M LOVED: tells a finder this pet has a family looking for it.
  3. GOOD BOY / GOOD GIRL: works as a back-of-tag line.
  4. BELONGS TO THE SHARMA FAMILY: use a family name rather than an address.
  5. HOME IS WHERE YOU ARE: for a rescue, a quiet nod to their journey.

4. Rescue and adoption date ideas

Adoption dates are one of the nicest things you can put on a tag. They also tell a finder this pet has a story, and an owner.

  1. ADOPTED 2026
  2. GOTCHA DAY 14.02.2026: the date they came home.
  3. SAVED ME / I SAVED THEM: for owners who feel it goes both ways.
  4. BORN 2025 / HOME 2026

5. Practical notes worth engraving

These are the lines that genuinely help whoever finds your pet. If one applies to you, give it priority over the fun lines above.

  1. ON MEDICATION: short and tells a finder to call you quickly.
  2. DEAF or BLIND: helps a finder approach safely.
  3. NEEDS MEDS: more urgent wording for a pet with a regular medical need.
  4. MICROCHIPPED: tells a vet or shelter to scan.
  5. REWARD: only if you mean it. It noticeably speeds up the call.
  6. SHY. PLEASE BE GENTLE. for a nervous pet.

How to choose the right wording for your pet

  • For a puppy or kitten: go classic (idea 1 or 2). They outgrow tags, so keep it simple and replace as they grow.
  • For a rescue: pick one sweet line (11-15) or an adoption date (16-19) for the back.
  • For a pet with a medical need: practical lines (20-25) first, fun second.
  • For a small tag (25mm): name plus number, nothing else. Save the wording for the back or a bigger tag.

Which tag should the wording go on?

Laser-engraved stainless steel tags fit finer text and can be engraved on both sides, which is the easiest way to fit a name and number on the front and a funny or practical line on the back. Hand-stamped copper and brass tags are usually stamped on one side only, so keep those to the essentials. Our Hand Stamped vs Laser Engraved guide explains the difference, and the pet tag care guide covers how each metal wears.

Frequently asked questions

What should I write on my dog's ID tag?
At minimum, your dog's name and a phone number you answer. If there is room, add a second number or a short note such as "on medication". Anything fun comes after that.

Can I put a funny message on a pet tag?
Yes, as long as the phone number still fits. The usual way is to put the name and number on the front and the funny line on the back of a laser-engraved tag.

Should I put my address on a pet tag?
We would leave it off. A phone number gets your pet home just as fast, and your city or area name is a safer way to add location context. See our Pet ID Tag Guide for the reasoning.

How many characters fit on a small pet tag?
It depends on the tag size and engraving method, so there is no single number. As a rule, a 25mm tag comfortably holds a name and one phone number; larger tags and laser engraving fit more. Send us your wording on WhatsApp and we will tell you what fits.

Is it a good idea to put "reward" on a pet tag?
Only if you really would pay one. A reward line tends to make finders call faster, but it is a promise to keep.

Can I engrave the same wording on both sides?
You can on laser-engraved tags, but it is more useful to split the content: name and friendliness on one side, phone numbers on the other.

What is a "gotcha day" tag?
Gotcha day is the date a rescue pet came home. Many owners engrave it on the back of the tag as a keepsake.
